Curious About Improv?

This class is a 7 week introduction to the world of long form improv!

This class will use collaborative games and exercises to introduce the participant to the beginning skills of long form improv: how to listen better, improve memory skills, speak confidently and from the heart, and how to have better conversations. Improvisational theater has been known to foster improved mental health through collaborative games and listening skills and the building of community and camaraderie through laughter. By the end of the 7 weeks, participants will be able to engage in grounded 2-person scenes that are created on the spot. Absolutely zero experience is required to play!

No improv or theater experience necessary! All adults are welcome!

Please view our Policies/COVID page for updated class guidleines.

SOLD OUT! Improv Essentials: Chasing the Game!

This 7 week class will focus on how to enhance your playing by teaching how to identify the game of a scene quickly and efficiently. At this point, you know how to do grounded 2 person scenes (AKA: 1st Beat Scenes) that address the WHO, WHERE and WHY…but how do you find the funny of the scene and chase it throughout a whole set or initiate a strong 2nd beat scene that gets right to the heart of the relationship or philosophy that has already been established? Tracey Gordon will lead you in 7 weeks of scene work and exercises to help you figure out how to notice the game and then how to make strong 2nd beat choices, how to tailor your walk-ons and tag-outs to hit the game hard and how to put all of this together into a long-form that chases the game as a team!

Prerequisite: Beginner Performance Class

SOLD OUT! Musical Improv: Protag vs Antag

Welcome to the Magical World of Musical Improv! This class will start you on your journey of narrative improv by introducing you to the Protagonist lens of a “Want Song” and to the Antagonist lens of a “Philosophy Song”. We will review some of our favorite song structures (tagline songs, verse/chorus songs, chorus/verse songs) while just touching on the very beginnings of how to use Musical Improv to tell a longer story. Since we will review song structure, even if you haven’t taken musical improv before, you are welcome to come on in to this class!

At the end of 7 weeks, you will know how to launch from an Opening Number into a Protagonist scene and song and then into an Antagonist scene and song!

At the end of the course, you will have the option of presenting at the Showcase!

No improv or theater experience necessary! All adults are welcome!

Come take a ride on the "who you are/where you are" train of improv.  Through Viola Spolin's (AKA: The Mother of Improvisational Theater) theater game techniques we will explore and heighten the human experience...and boy is it fun as HECK.  This method is non competitive, non dictatorial and for everyone at all levels. And I mean Everyone.

So get back over here and get in the sauce with your humanity again! The games are accessible, the evaluation is kind, and the side coaching happens in the moment so you can transform without waiting for your turn to come around again- what?! Yes.  Come and be a part of a group and let's get saucy this spring!

Welcome to UNISPHERE!

Unisphere is the Form Creation Program for FoHi Improv. In order to be eligible for Unisphere, you need to complete our Program Requirements, which can be found HERE.

Prerequisites: Beginner Performance and 2 Improv Essential Classes from FoHi Improv (or instructor approval if you have fulfilled this requirement at another long form improv school.) The understanding is that everyone participating understands most of the language of long form improv, including how to do 1st and 2nd beat scenes, a run of a show, how to do group scenes, walk-ons and tag-outs, time-dashes and how to share the space in a productive manner as well as be able to play in many different styles.

Energy Audition Based Opportunity: The first session of Unisphere is an energy audition. This means that anyone who is eligible is allowed to sign up for Unisphere and participate, but the audition will determine what team you will be placed on based on style of playing and chemistry between players. How many people sign-up will determine the size and amount of players per team. If there is only one team, then the audition will be used to determine which style of playing suits the team best for the run of Unisphere.

The Unisphere Program represents the most advanced level of playing. The form that each Unisphere team presents has never been seen before. The team(s) will be involved with a coach who will tailor their feedback to what the team needs to work on, but the team MUST be willing to listen to each other and want to be creative with improv at this point in their journey.

The team will also be responsible for presenting their new work at 3 separate performances, two of which will have a jam which they will lead following their performance that anyone can participate in. The most advanced players of FoHi Improv should always be able to play with ANYONE and make them shine on stage!

Please register. Pay cost of $375 via VENMO (@FoHiImprov) or ZELLE (fohiimprov@gmail.com).
